Asked to

Jacob

Jacob (Israel), their father, who was holding them responsible for the demand to bring Benjamin to Egypt.

Why It Was Asked

The brothers deflect responsibility for the crisis they created by arguing they could not have predicted Joseph’s demand. By framing their defense as a question, they invite their father to acknowledge the reasonableness of their actions rather than directly confronting his blame. The interrogative form softens what would be a harsh declaration (‘We couldn’t have known!’) into an appeal for understanding.

The Response

The text does not record Jacob’s immediate verbal response to this rhetorical question. However, Genesis 43:11-14 shows Jacob eventually accepting the inevitable necessity of sending Benjamin, blessing the journey and committing the outcome to God Almighty.

The Bigger Picture

The brothers’ question functions as a corporate defense mechanism against their father’s implied accusation. The Hebrew construction ‘hayado’a neda” employs an infinitive absolute before the finite verb, creating emphatic negation: ‘absolutely knowing, could we have known?’ This grammatical intensity reveals their desperation to shift blame from themselves to circumstances beyond their control. They frame their defense as a question because direct assertion would sound defiant toward their father, while interrogative form invites him to share their perspective. Yet beneath their reasonable-sounding defense lies unacknowledged guilt; they created the family’s vulnerability to Egyptian demands by selling Joseph years earlier. Their question protests present accountability while avoiding past culpability, making it both truthful in the immediate sense and evasive regarding deeper responsibility.

For Your Life Today

When life demands something painful you never saw coming, resist the urge to endlessly justify yourself. The brothers were technically right, they couldn’t have predicted Joseph’s demand, but their defensiveness revealed hearts still avoiding full accountability for past sins. Sometimes God uses unforeseeable circumstances to expose areas where we need to grow in trust and humility. Instead of asking ‘How could I have known?’ ask ‘What is God teaching me now?’ Jacob eventually surrendered Benjamin because he chose faith over fear. When circumstances force your hand, surrender to God’s larger purposes even when the path forward terrifies you. Genesis 50:20 reveals that what others mean for evil, God intends for good; even the consequences you never saw coming.
