“Where wilt thou that we prepare?”
The full verse · Luke 22:9 · KJV
they unto , wilt that we ?
Asked by
Peter and John: two of the twelve apostles, sent by Jesus to "Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat" (Luke 22:8)
Asked to
Jesus: the Son of God and promised Messiah, who had sent Peter and John to prepare the Passover on the day of unleavened bread (Luke 22:7-8)
The Scene
On the day of unleavened bread, "when the passover must be killed," Jesus sends Peter and John to go and prepare the Passover (Luke 22:7-8).
Why It Was Asked
The purpose behind the questionJesus gave Peter and John a task but not an address. They needed to know where to go. Gill explains that they were not asking which town, since "it was a fixed and determined thing, that the passover should be eaten at Jerusalem, and nowhere else." They were asking which house in Jerusalem. It is a simple, practical question from two men ready to obey.
The Response
What Scripture recordsJesus told them exactly what to do: "when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in" (Luke 22:10). They were to ask the master of the house for the guestchamber, and he would show them "a large upper room furnished" (Luke 22:11-12). "And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover" (Luke 22:13).
Historical Context
The world behind the wordsThe Passover remembered Israel's rescue from Egypt. The Law said it could not be sacrificed "within any of thy gates," but only "at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in" (Deuteronomy 16:5-6). By Jesus' day that place was Jerusalem, which is why Gill says the disciples were only asking which house.
The feast of unleavened bread followed the Passover. Barnes notes that "The feast continued eight days, including the day on which the paschal lamb was killed and eaten." Preparing meant getting the lamb, the unleavened bread, and the room ready for the meal.
The Bigger Picture
Where this fits in God's storyThis row is mostly about logistics, but the surrounding passage shows Jesus in full command of what is about to happen. He sends the disciples, He knows who they will meet, and everything happens "as he had said unto them" (Luke 22:13). Matthew Henry says the arrangement taught the disciples "to depend upon the conduct of Providence, and to follow that, step by step."
The meal they were preparing would be His last before He suffered. Jesus would tell them, "With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer" (Luke 22:15).
Look Closer
Why did Peter and John need to ask this question?
Carry the question into prayer and conversation.
Lord, You have given me things to do for You; where do You want me to go next, and how will You show me?
A prayer to carry into the day.
- Peter and John were given a task before they had all the details. How do you usually respond when God's direction comes one step at a time?
- Tell about a time when you asked God a practical question and saw Him provide what you needed.
For you, a small group, a friend, or the dinner table.
It is good to ask Jesus practical questions. Peter and John did not pretend to know where to go. They asked, and Jesus answered clearly.
Notice also that they obeyed before they knew every detail. They went, they found everything "as he had said unto them," and they made ready (Luke 22:13). Obedience often looks like taking the next step He shows you.
This does not mean you should expect a sign as specific as a man with a pitcher every time you need direction. This was a unique moment before the cross. What carries over is the pattern: ask Him, listen, and do what He says.
