“And seek ye the priesthood also?”

The full verse · Numbers 16:10 · KJV

And he hath brought thee to him, and all thy the of with thee: and ye the also?

Asked by

Moses

Asked to

Korah

Korah and his fellow Levitical rebels who challenged Aaron’s exclusive priesthood, representing 250 leaders seeking priestly status.

Why It Was Asked

Moses asks to expose and condemn Korah’s true ambition. By framing covetousness as a question, Moses forces public acknowledgment of the sin while highlighting its absurdity. The question rebukes by revealing motivation, making denial impossible before the congregation.

The Response

Korah does not answer this question directly. Instead, he and his followers gather the whole congregation against Moses and Aaron at the tent of meeting, where God’s glory appears in judgment (Numbers 16:19-21).

The Bigger Picture

This question cuts to the heart of Korah’s rebellion. Moses does not ask whether they seek the priesthood; he knows they do. The question exposes ambition publicly and condemns it rhetorically. The Hebrew particle gam (‘also’) carries biting force: you already have nearness to God, and you want the priesthood also? The question structure makes Korah’s greed transparent before the congregation. Moses asks rather than accuses to let the congregation reach the verdict themselves. The theological principle stands immovable: God appoints ministers, not human ambition. To seek what God has not granted is to rebel against God Himself, a truth Korah learned when the earth swallowed him alive.

For Your Life Today

Are you reaching for ministry roles God hasn’t assigned? Moses’s question pierces through spiritual ambition masquerading as holy zeal. Korah had legitimate ministry, serving at the tabernacle, but wanted Aaron’s authority. Ministry envy destroys churches today just as it destroyed Korah then. Instead of coveting another’s calling, embrace the priesthood you already possess. First Peter 2:5 declares every believer a priest offering spiritual sacrifices through Jesus Christ. You need not grasp for Aaron’s role because Christ has made you a priest in His order. Serve faithfully where God places you, remembering that no divine calling is small when given by the Almighty (1 Corinthians 12:18).
