“Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory?”
The full verse · Haggai 2:3 · KJV
Who is among you that this in her ? and how do ye it ? is it not in your in of it as nothing?
Why It Was Asked
The purpose behind the questionHaggai’s question sought to confront the elders’ discouragement about the temple’s current condition compared to its past splendor. It was a genuine inquiry designed to make them reflect on their perspective and prepare them for God’s encouragement (Haggai 2:3). The goal was to motivate renewed faith and hope amid rebuilding.
The Response
What Scripture recordsThe elders answered Haggai acknowledging the temple’s diminished appearance, saying, “Is it not as nothing in your eyes?” (Haggai 2:3). They recognized the contrast between the former glory and the current modest state, reflecting their discouragement.
The Bigger Picture
Where this fits in God's storyHaggai’s question ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory?’ is carefully chronological. The temple had been destroyed in 586 BC; this exchange occurs in 520 BC. Anyone old enough to have seen Solomon’s temple would be over seventy years old. The question acknowledges that such witnesses exist, Ezra 3:12 records the older generation weeping at the foundation-laying, but that they are few and their memory functions as a standard against which the current structure appears crushing. The Hebrew כְּאַיִן (ke’ayin, as nothing) in verse 3b captures what Zechariah 4:10 calls ‘the day of small things’, a rebuilt temple so modest compared to Solomon’s that it tempts the community to despair rather than worship. Haggai’s answer to the question is not to minimize the comparison but to promise that the latter glory of this house will exceed the former (verse 9), a promise ultimately fulfilled not by architectural splendor but by the presence of the One who called Himself the temple (John 2:19–21).
Believers today may face discouragement when their spiritual lives or ministries seem less impressive than others. Like the elders, we must remember God’s promises and perspective (Psalm 27:13-14; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18). Our confidence should rest in God’s presence, not outward appearances. We are called to persevere and build with faith, knowing God honors genuine devotion (Hebrews 12:1-3).
