1 Kings

“Why hast thou done so?”

“Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?”

“Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?”

“What wouldest thou?”

“My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?”

“Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

“Is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”

“Do you know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me?”

“Comest thou peaceably?”

“Why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?”

“Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die?”

“Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?”

“For who is able to judge this thy so great a people?”

“But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne?”

“I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and juniper logs?”

“Will God indeed dwell on the earth?”

“Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?”

“What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?”

“What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother?”

“Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you?”

“What hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own country?”

“How do ye advise that I may answer this people?”

“What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?”

“What portion have we in David?”

“What way went he?”

“Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah?”

“Ahijah, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill, and you are to give her such and such an answer. When she arrives, she will pretend to be someone else?”

“Why feignest thou thyself to be another?”

“What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God?”

“O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?”

“Art thou that my lord Elijah?”

“What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?”

“Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?”

“Art thou he that troubleth Israel?”

“How long halt ye between two opinions?”

“Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God?”

“Shout louder! Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened?”

“I have had enough, LORD. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors?”

“What doest thou here, Elijah?”

“What doest thou here, Elijah?”

“For what have I done to thee?”

“See how this fellow is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him?”

“Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude?”

“Who shall begin the battle?”

“The kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life?”

“Is he yet alive?”

“Ben-Hadad is your brother?”

“I will return the cities my father took from your father. You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria?”

“Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?”

“Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel?”

“Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead?”

“Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession?”

“Hast thou found me, O mine enemy?”

“Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me?”

“Know ye that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?”

“Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramothgilead ?”

“Shall I go against Ramothgilead to battle, or shall I forbear?”

“Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him?”

“Micaiah, shall we go against Ramothgilead to battle, or shall we forbear?”

“How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD?”

“Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good concerning me, but evil?”

“Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead ?”

“Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?”
