The Identity of Jesus

“Where is he that is born King of the Jews?”

“Where Christ should be born”

“I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?”

“Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works?”

“Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?”

“What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”

“What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? Art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”

“Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?”

“For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?”

“Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?”

“Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them?”

“Believe ye that I am able to do this?”

“Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?”

“But what went ye out for to see? A prophet?”

“Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him”

“Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?”

“Is not this the son of David?”

“If Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?”

“If I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out?”

“Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?”

“Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?”

“Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?”

“And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?”

“O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”

“Can ye not discern the signs of the times?”

“Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?”

“But whom say ye that I am?”

“Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?”

“Doth not your master pay tribute?”

“What thinkest thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? Of their own children, or of strangers?”

“Why callest thou me good?”

“What will ye that I shall do unto you?”

“Who is this?”

“Hearest thou what these say? Have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?”

“By what authority doest thou these things? And who gave thee this authority?”

“The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of men? Why did ye not then believe him?”

“Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?”

“What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he?”

“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?”

“If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?”

“Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink?”

“When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked, and clothed thee?”

“Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?”

“To what purpose is this waste?”

“Why trouble ye the woman?”

“Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?”

“Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee?”

“What further need have we of witnesses?”

“Who is he that smote thee?”

“Art thou the King of the Jews?”

“Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?”

“What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?”

“Why, what evil hath he done?”

“What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us?”

“What thing is this? What new doctrine is this?”

“Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?”

“Why reason ye these things in your hearts?”

“Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?”

“Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?”

“Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?”

“How can Satan cast out Satan?”

“What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

“What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God?”

“What is thy name?”

“From whence hath this man these things? And what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?”

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?”

“Why doth this generation seek after a sign?”

“Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? Have ye your heart yet hardened?”

“Having eyes, see ye not? And having ears, hear ye not? And do ye not remember?”

“How is it that ye do not understand?”

“If he saw ought”

“Whom do men say that I am?”

“But whom say ye that I am?”

“Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?”

“How it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought”

“Why callest thou me good?”

“What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?”

“Why do ye this?”

“What do ye, loosing the colt?”

“By what authority doest thou these things? And who gave thee this authority to do these things?”

“The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?”

“What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do?”

“Have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:”

“This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?”

“How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?”

“David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son?”

“Why was this waste of the ointment made?”

“Why trouble ye her?”

“Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?”

“Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee?”

“Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

“What need we any further witnesses?”

“What think ye?”

“Art thou the King of the Jews?”

“Answerest thou nothing?”

“Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”

“What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?”

“Why, what evil hath he done?”

“How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?”

“And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

“Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us?”

“How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?”

“Is not this Joseph's son?”

“What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us?”

“Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”

“What reason ye in your hearts?”

“Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?”

“Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?”

“Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?”

“How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?”

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”

“Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?”

“Art thou he that should come? Or look we for another?”

“Who is this that forgiveth sins also?”

“Where is your faith? What manner of man is this!”

“What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high?”

“What is thy name?”

“John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things?”

“Whom say the people that I am?”

“But whom say ye that I am?”

“If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?”

“And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out?”

“Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?”

“What will I, if it be already kindled?”

“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth?”

“How is it that ye do not discern this time?”

“Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

“Why callest thou me good?”

“What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?”

“Why do ye loose him?”

“Why loose ye the colt?”

“Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? Or who is he that gave thee this authority?”

“The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?”

“What shall I do?”

“What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?”

“How say they that Christ is David's son?”

“David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?”

“Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?”

“Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?”

“Art thou the Christ?”

“Art thou then the Son of God?”

“What need we any further witness?”

“Art thou the King of the Jews?”

“Why seek ye the living among the dead?”

“Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?”

“What things?”

“Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?”

“Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

“Why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?”

“Have ye here any meat?”

“Who art thou?”

“What then? Art thou Elias? Art thou that prophet?”

“Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?”

“What seek ye? Where dwellest thou?”

“Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?”

“Whence knowest thou me?”

“Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou?”

“Woman, what have I to do with thee?”

“What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?”

“Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?”

“If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?”

“Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?”

“Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?”

“Is not this the Christ?”

“What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?”

“But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”

“Rabbi, when camest thou hither?”

“What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? What dost thou work?”

“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?”

“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

“This is an hard saying; who can hear it?”

“Doth this offend you?”

“What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?”

“Lord, to whom shall we go?”

“Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?”

“Where is he?”

“How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?”

“Who goeth about to kill thee?”

“Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?”

“Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?”

“When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?”

“Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? Will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?”

“What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?”

“Shall Christ come out of Galilee?”

“Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

“Why have ye not brought him?”

“Are ye also deceived?”

“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?”

“Art thou also of Galilee?”

“Where is thy Father?”

“Will he kill himself?”

“Who art thou?”

“Why do ye not understand my speech?”

“Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?”

“Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?”

“Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? And the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?”

“Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?”

“How were thine eyes opened?”

“How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles?”

“What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes?”

“What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?”

“Wherefore would ye hear it again? Will ye also be his disciples?”

“Dost thou believe on the Son of God?”

“Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?”

“Why hear ye him?”

“Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?”

“How long dost thou make us to doubt?”

“For which of those works do ye stone me?”

“Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”

“Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?”

“Believest thou this?”

“Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?”

“What do we?”

“What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?”

“Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing?”

“We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?”

“Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

“Lord, dost thou wash my feet?”

“Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?”

“Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? How sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”

“Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?”

“Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?”

“Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?”

“Whom seek ye?”

“Whom seek ye?”

“Why askest thou me?”

“Art thou the King of the Jews?”

“Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?”

“Am I a Jew? What hast thou done?”

“Art thou a king then?”

“What is truth?”

“Will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”

“Whence art thou?”

“Shall I crucify your King?”

“Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?”

“Children, have ye any meat?”

“Who art thou?”

“Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?”

“What meaneth this?”

“Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? Or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?”

“By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?”

“Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?”

“Who shall declare his generation?”

“I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? Of himself, or of some other man?”

“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”

“Who art thou, Lord?”

“Whom think ye that I am?”

“What will this babbler say?”

“Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”

“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”

“Who art thou, Lord?”

“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”

“Who art thou, Lord?”

“King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets?”

“Who is he that condemneth?”

“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?”

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?”

“And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?”

“Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?”

“For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?”

“But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?”

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

“If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?”

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?”

“Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

“Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”
